POINT
ZERO
Director
- Nicola Jouvin / Karine Loubet, Country - France,
Year - 1989
|
|

|
| Synopsis:
The conservative estimate of the number of refugees
in this world is, in itself, enough to shake you to
the core, at least, if you are prepared to look from
comfortable position into a problem that is just as
comfortably a long way off. It is not purely the repressive
political regulations, but more especially a hopeless
economic situation which will ensure an ever flowing
stream of the hopeless. The West beckons, but only
a few will inherit those flesh pots. The result, a
monotonous life in a no-man's land between the point
of departure and the last uncrossable frontier, is
Point Zero (the true name of whatever shanty town
or barrio). The Western culture penetrates into the
most desolate of villages - here in Togo or Nigeria
or Mauretania thanks to missionaries, with following
in their wake, Charlie Chaplin and Buffalo Bill -
but only as an export article, as a mirage on a white
linen cloth. Point Zero is the end of the road before
the Central Point from where the boats leave for Europe.

BLACK
SQUARE (CHIORNY KVADRAT)
Director
- Lossif Pasternak, Country - U.S.S.R, Year - 1988
|
|
|
| Synopsis:
If perestroika seems slow to influence Soviet
features, its effect on documentaries is clear in
the Black Square, an original and lively look at 20th
century avant-garde painting in the USSR. Director
lossif Pasternak approaches his subject with a real
feeling for the visual and the joys of film-making.
The Soviet avantgarde is traced from Russian constructivism
to a brief flowering in the Kruschev years, stagnation
under Brezhnev and the current revival of interest
in this kind of art. What most impresses about Black
Square, however apart from its informatvie side, is
the way it links artistic production the changing
political climate. Numerous short interviews with
contemporary painters point to the atmosphere of creative
liberation that has followed perestroika. The film
certainly is more a sample of Soviet painting in this
century than a comprehensive study. Watching fascinated
Russian at a show of what used to be "unofficial art",
one wonders how many avant-garde works have left the
country never to be seen again. More is the marvel
that Pasternak succeeds so well in tracing the cultural
politics after revolution in so concise and engrossing
a film. |
