EYES OF STONE

Synopsis: A film about women and the ritual of spirit possession and cure, a ritual of faith, rebellio and individual expression that thrives within the confines of a stringent patriarchal order. Shot in a village of Bilwara district of Rajasthan, the film documents one woman's participation in the ritual, and through it, the strengths and sorrows of her life. Shanta, 19 married at ten, the mother of two sons, with a husband who is a truchdriver away for long spells, has been ill for five years with the evil eyes of a "dakari". She has a sense of dis-association and suffers from aches and pain. The family try diverse medications and finaly pin their hopes on the goddess, Bghankya Mata. The ritualised healing is a turning point in Shanta's life.

DIRECTOR'S BIO-DATA : Nilita Vachani studied English Literature of Delhi University. Went on the study filmmaking in the U.S. at Annenberg School of Communications, Unviersity of Pennslvania and then at the Art Institute of Chicago. 1985 to 87 she moved to New York to work as the editor of films made by Michael Camerini, Peggy stern and Mira Nair. She returned to India in 1987. She was assistant director on Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay and script supervisor of Mssissippi Masala. Eyes of Stone is her directorial debut.

Synopsis: Three old men live in Budapest. An antiquary, a clown and a sculptor. They are good friends and all would meet at the Antiquary's flat to drink and play cards. Once an angel told them that the Saviour is born. The old men - as the three wise men did - start to welcome the Little Jesus.
