THE COW (KOPOBA)

Director - Alexander Petrov, Country - Russia, Year - 1989

Synopsis: What could be more bleak than living in a linesman's cabin lost in tha boundless russian Steppe? Even a routine event like the birth of a calf becomes a great miracle for a young boy's soul. The tragic lyricism of Andrei Platonov, one of the greatest Russian writers, is turned into a psychologically refined screen world with a strange authenticity. The cow is a film by Alexander Petrov, one of the leaders of Soviet film animation.

DIRECTOR'S BIO-DATA : Born in Yaroslavl in 1957, where he studied in the art school from the age of twelve. In 1976 he enrolled in the All-Union Institute of Cinematography. As a designer he made two diploma films in the Armenfilm Studio in 1982. He has made several films with other directors like V Fomin, A Karaev and V Petkevic which have won wide acclaim. The Cow is his debut as a director, scriptwriter and animator.

Director - Pavel Koutsky, Country - Czechoslovakia, Year - 1989

Synopsis: A film about antagonistic contradictions in man's nature, demonstrated by a few quite contradictory grotesque episodes. As in previous Koutsky's films - all of them very successful - this, his lates film, allows him the scope to use and develop free drawing and full animation.

DIRECTOR'S BIO-DATA : Born Prague 1957. Studied at UPRUM University of Fine Arts. Koustsky's film Honza set out into the World using elt cutting was made when he was 13. Just before his matriculation he completed Fairytale Etude (76). All through his student life Koutsky was busy making animated films, winning many prizes at amatuer film contests. His prodigious output of ilms testify to the originality and inventiveness of his style and thinking, and his penchant for humorous satire.
