IN
THE LAND OF THE DEAF
Director
- Nicolas Philibert Country - France
|
|
|
| Synopsis:
What is the world like for thousands of people
living in silence? Whoever ventures In the land of
the Deaf will be struck by the strangeness of the
choreography of signs they use to express themselves.
Since the beginning of time, these signs have constituted
a true language in which each world, each idea, is
translated into an image drawn in space. These signs,
as precise and nuanced as words, lend themselves equally
well to declarations of love as to higly detailed
technical descriptions. Jean-Claude, Abou, Claire,
Philo, Hubert, Karine and all the rest, profoundly
deaf since birth or early childhood, dream think and
communicate in signs, and see the world differently.
With them we shall discover this distant land where
looking and touching are so important. This film tells
their stories and allows us to see the world through
their eyes. "My ideaa was to make a film that would
plunge the viewer into the world of the deaf, a film
whose mother tongue would be sign language. I wanted
to give a voice to these people whom we know nothing
about and whose system of communication is totalyy
different from ours, to try to see the world through
their eyes. Beyond the question of the "handicapped",
what the film emphasises is the existence of a true
deaf culture, which has its own roots, codes, models
and customs. This si the culture that I wanted to
expose the viewer to and not in an abstrct or theoretical
way but by means of emotions. |

MANUFACTURING
CONSENT: Noam Chomsky and the Media
Director
- Peter Wintonick / Mark Achbar Country - Canada
|
|
|
| Synopsis:
In an energetic fusion of images and ideas, Manufacturing
Consent explores the political life and times of the
controvesrsial author, linguist and radical philosopher,
Noam Chomsky. As a boy during the despression, Chomsky
worked on his uncle's news-stand in Manhattan. Today,
he is an outspoken critic of the press and one of
America's leading dissidents. Highlighting Chomsky's
analysis of the media, Manufacturing Consent focuses
on democratic societies where populations, not disciplined
by force, are subjected to more subtle forms of ideological
control. Shocking example of media deception permeate
Chomsky's critique of the forces at work behind the
daily news. Chomsky encourages his listeners to extricate
themselves from this "Web of deceit" by understanding
a course of "intellectual self-defense." "Travelling
with him through Canada, Japan, Europe and across
the USA we witnessed a trieless activist challenging
and being cnfronted by the public and the press."
