| Synopsis:
Sona Maati is the story of Sona Bai, a woman
from a village called Dhulmera Station in the arid
desert of Bikaner, Rajasthan. When the waters from
the Indira Gandhi Canal came, ordinary gold of the
desert started turning green. Those vast barren
tracts of land, became valuable properties. All
traditional land holdings wer cancelled and a new
dispensatin took place. The Urmul Trust went to
Dhulmera Station and helped the women organise a
group to find solutions to problems. Illiterate
but insightful Sona Bai became the natureal leader
of the women's group. She inspires her fellow women
to fight for their rights. |

DIRECTOR'S
BIO-DATA : Born 1963, Delhi. Master in Political
Science and Mass Communication, taught undergraduate
coruses in University of Delhi and served as Media
Consultant to the Dept. of Education, Ministry
of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Producing and directing film since 1987. The Women
Betrayed was her first independent documentary
on individual resistance to the practice of witch
hunting among tribals.

In the Equatorial forest of South-cast Cameroon,
live the Baka Pygmies. To name theselves the Baka
chose a word from their language, which means "the
gesture of the bird touching the branch." When the
berries of the branch have been eaten, the bird
"sings to the tree" to thank it. Then he flies away
to others trees….. |

BIO-DATA : Born 1957, Zairr. An independent
filmmaker of Belgian nationality. BA in roam Philogy,
UCL and Cinema studies at INSAS, Brussels. He
is the founder of Les Productins Duration Sablier
to encourage the production of author films and
creative documentaries. Among his films, three
have won awards at numerous international festivals:
The Sphinx, Sloughterhouse and Voices.

RASKOLS

| Synopsis:
Roskols is a documentary about the criminal
phenomenon known as "raskolism" and its underlying
human rights issues in Papua New Guinea. The film
looks at the violent behaviour of raskol gangs and
their growing anger against a small government elite
which is jeopardising the sustainable human development
of a whole nation. Raskols are usually marginalised
people who are attempting to participate in a cash
economy in a society where prestige is based on
one's ability to particpate in ceremonial exchange.
The film looks at the lives of the Nightfox and
kaupeke gangs of the Western Highlands as they try
to make sense of their traditional past, their criminal
actions and their future. |

DIRECTOR'S
BIO-DATA : Sally began her career in the media
in 1980 as a cadet journalist with West Australian
Newspapers. Between 1982-1986 she worked for Channel
4 Television in London and its associated electronic
publishing company - Interfax as achief sub editor.
After completing her Arts degree, she made her
first short film Cross Purposes and was accepted
to study at the Australian Film, Television &
Radio School. In 1992, she founded Emerald Films,
an independent production company based in Sydney,
which produces documentaries, Short films, television
commercials and feature. Sally is currently working
on her second documentary film Inside Out which
looks at criminality in the 1990s.

NARMADA:
A Valley Rises

| Synopsis:
One of the largest dams, the Sardar Sarovar
is being constructed on the Narmada River in India.
It will displace over 160,0000 people. This award
winning film documents a 200 kilometre non-violent
Gandhian march involving 6000 participants. The
Narmada march would evoke the historical, political
and emotinal overtones of Mahatma Gandhi's famos
Salt March against Britizh Imperial rule. A beautifully
photographed, dramatic and intimate protrait of
a unique grassroots movements, the film raises critical
and universal issues of human-rights, social justice
and democracy. All within the framework of a compelling
universal story. |

DIRECTOR'S
BIO-DATA : Born in India. After completing
a B.Sc. from Delhi University he moved to Canada
in 1983. Graduated with a BFA (Honors) in Film
Production from York University in 1987. Since
then he has worked as a prdocuer, director and
writer on numerous documentary productions. He
has also worked as a cinematographer with several
filmmakers including Anne Henderson (A Song for
Tibet), John Greyson(After the Bath) and Helen
Lee (My Niagara). Kazimi is on the Board of the
Canadian Independent Film Caucus. In addition
to his worked as a film/video instructor, human
rights activist and anti-racist educator. Narmada:
A Valley Rises is his first documentary.
