ARIBAM
SYAM SHARMA
|
|
|
| A
Master in Philosophy, vocalist and composer, stage
actor and director, Aribam Syam Sharma is one of the
few talented contemporary directors of India with
a style of his own. He has single-handedly put Manipuri
cinema on the film map of the country. Beginning with
films that struck a fine balance between aesthetic
considerations and commercial compulsions such as
LAMJA PARASURAM, SAAPHABEE and OLANGTHAGEE WANGMADASOO,
he began working on the films he really wanted to
make. His IMAGI NINGTHEM won the Grand Prix at Nantes,
France in 1982, while ISHANOU and SANABI confirmed
him as a filmmaker of great importance. Though Aribam's
films are apparently free from complexity, his themes
are intricate and need close observation in terms
of Manipuri Culture. His SANGAI - THE DANCING DEER
was declared the "Outstanding Film of the year 1989"
by the British Film Institute, London, His documentary
ORCHIDS OF MANIPUR won the National Award. |
